We have about 15 straight run (unsexed) domestic guineafowl left of the original 30. Not the odds I was hoping for, but then again we’d be doing pretty good if this were baseball and not farming.
Why guineas? First, they are supposed to be great for pest control – eating bugs like ticks and killing snakes. Second, they are good alert animals, as they make a god-awful shriek (think peacock) when they notice a potential predator or even just an unfamiliar guest on the property. We read that the chickens and ducks will learn to take heed and run for cover when the guineas start making a ruckus.
And, of course, you can eat them (they taste like game bird) and their eggs. Isn’t that the theme around here?
